History

History of Indo US Cultural Association Our Indo US cultural Association of Winston-Salem was founded by Dr.Gokhale in the 1970s. Dr.Gokhale was a well known Professor at Wake Forest University . It was his idea to start an Association which would serve as a bridge betwee n Indians and local American community and hence the name Indo US Cultural Association. The Association was originally started with about 8-9 families as members and over the years has grown with current membership of about 80 families. The main events in the past have been for the Association to serve as a get together platform for local Indian families to promote Indian culture among their American friends. Diwali has always been an important event of the Association where children and adults got to participate and reveal their talents.

1980's

During the 1980s, the members have taken an active part in the May Fest, an all day festival event, conducted by the city where they participated in cultural events along with other communities of Winston-Salem in Downtown. Some of the members have taken part in community service events like planting trees for the beautification of Winston-Salem conducted by the city. Other community service done by the members of the Association include canned food drive during Diwali that was donated to the Food Bank, Raised funds for disasters in India.

1990's and 2000

Over the years the Association has continued to grow with support from more members. Today the Association conducts atleast four events annually. Diwali continues to be the major event of the year. This year,2006, the Association has taken another big leap forward and will conduct “Utsava” , an India fest function, which is an all day event, where members of the Association and their friends will hold an extravagant display of our Indian culture to the public of Winston-Salem in the form of cultural programs, Interactive demonstrative workshops, with vendors serving an assortment of Indian cuisine As the Association continues to progress.....
